7:02 am
good weekend. now to our top story. it has been 35 long days how since the oil rig good exploded off the coast of louisiana and oil is still leaking at least 6 million gallons of crude have spewed on to the gulf, those in some scientists believe it could be as much as 11 million gallons. the obama administration has appointed a commission to investigate the spill. it is threatening to take over the operation. and as early as tomorrow, bp may try to clog the leak by pouring cement and mud down the blown well. katie couric is in grand isle, louisiana with the very latest. katie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. anger and frustration is growing in this region by the minute. why can't they, a, clean up this oil, but, more importantly, why can't anyone plug this leak? so yesterday i took a chopper ride with rear admiral mary landry who is in charge of coordinating in effort, and we went out to the affected area
7:03 am
and we saw veritable flow till laugh ships working very hard to try get this thing under control. and of course the next biggest attempt as you mentioned is this so-called top kill where they basically channel this heavy mud into the well in an effort to plug it and top it off with sm t cement. if that doesn't work, they'll go a junk shot. and if that doesn't work, of course they're drilling these relief wells at the site of the oil to try to suck that oil and prevent it from going out of the current pipe where it's leaking from. so they're all hoping that these efforts will work, but nothing's a sure thing. in fact, this top kill has never been tried in water so deep. >> right. talk to me a little bit about being there and what you see and what it's like. >> reporter: well, you know, here on grand isle, it's a
7:04 am
beautiful little island, but the people are getting increasingly frustrated. they want the government to do more, they want bp to do more. and they were able to clean up these beaches. i don't know if you remember last week where it looked like chocolate pudding all over these beaches. they were able to clean that up. the tide takes some of this oil out. but it's of course the marshlands, very fragile marshlands that are sch a critical part of the ecosystem that they're trying to protect p. and admiral landry said this are so many different parties that you have to coordinate with. for example the mayor told the coast guard they didn't want booms used around the beach because it would be unsightly for beach goer, which seems slightly ridiculous, of course. but she said they have to respect the wishes of local leaders here. >> and on the other side of the coin not far from there, they're -- they want the army corps of engineers to guild these giant burns to prevent h stuff coming to shore.
7:05 am
>> that's right. and of course you have to get permits and you have to study the environmental impact of even building those berms. but i think today you'll seat white house take a more proactive stance, much more aggressive. you'll see thad allen at the press briefing with robert gibbs because they want to make sure that the american people know what the government is doing. there are more than 1,000 ships down here, 24,000 people working on this effort. but of course the big problem is if they can't plug the leak, what good does it do. so everybody is working towards wednesday, now, when i think they'll try the top kill procedure. but it's a very iffy proposition. >> thank you very much for getting up this morning and giving us your expertise. and of course we'll look for more in-depth coverage from you tonight on the evening news. have a good day.
7:06 am
joining us from robert, louisiana is bp's chief operating officer, doug suttles. good morning. >> good morning. >> i want to start with what the obama administration said about bp over the weekend. they said they've had enough of bp missing deadlines and not nipping this in the bud and that if you can't handle it, that should you get out of the way. will you will be to cede control to the federal government? >> maggie, the federal government does have ultimate control of this event. they can tell us to do that if they choose to do that. i think what we see is a huge a frustration. we share it. i share the secretary's frustration. i want this thing to stop. we want it stopped. the people who live here want it to stop. i'm doing everything we can. i don't know anything we could be doing that we aren't doing. we're getting lots of help from lots of places. the government is looking at what we do every day, they're providing experts, as well. so i think it's this huge sense of frustration that we haven't been able to stop it yet. >> have you reached out to
7:07 am
everyone who could potentially help you here? are we to understand that the brightest minds in the world have not been able to come up with a way to cap this leak for the last 33 days? >> maggie, our company does more ultra deep water work than anybody. we have a huge number of experts. but we didn't stop there. we went out and got those from the other oil companies. we've gone to the government for the best and the brightest there. i don't know of anyone out there with expertise we haven't tapped into. and if they're out there, we'll find them and we'll put them to work. this is a big, big challenge. i think admiral allen talked about it yesterday. it's trying to do this 5,000 feet under the sea is very difficult. >> you say that ultimately the federal government has control, yet the epa had asked to you switch to something that they believe is less toxic, yet you have not done it. you're basically involved in a standoff with the epa right now.
7:08 am
why not, if they have control, why not listen to what they want? >> well, we're not in a standoff with the epa. what they told us to do is they said we want you to find a less toxic, more effective chemical. and what we've done has been pursuing that request. we actually met again with them yesterday and what we're finding is that some of the products that are out there just aren't available. t they're not available in the quantities. and some of the products on the list actually have long term issues with them. we've shared the details of those with the epa and that's the reason we're not using those to pro ducts. we met again last night, we want to find something if there is something out there that's better. but we actually believe this is a good product. but i'll tell you, if we can find something less toxic and more effective, we will put to use. >> we know the epa does have concerns about the product you're using. lastly, i wanted to ask you to confirm that you will try this top kill strategy, this heavy mud and cement to cap the well
